FOREIGN OFFICE, September 7th, 1901.
With reference to your letter of the 29th ultimo I am directed by the Marquess of Lansdowne to transmit to you, for the information of Mr. Secretary Chamberlain, a copy of a Memorandum drawn up in this Department pointing out the disadvantage of correcting unofficial publications.
Lord Lansdowne is of opinion that it would not be desirable to make any communication to Messrs. McMillan respecting the inaccuracy of the Map of China recently published by them as suggested in your letter.
If a Government Department issues corrections of unofficial publications it becomes in the eyes of the publishers and the public responsible for their accuracy,
I am,
Sir,
Your obedient,
humble Servant,
Francis Bertie
Under Secretary of State Colonial Office.
